The Town of Lake Cowichan is a growing, vibrant community of approximately 3,000 people, with an additional 3,500 people in the surrounding area.

This idyllic community is situated on Cowichan Lake with the beautiful heritage Cowichan River flowing through the center of town. It was incorporated as a municipality in 1944.

The Town of Lake Cowichan may be reached via Duncan from either Vancouver, Victoria or Nanaimo B.C., and is 20 minutes by road from Duncan.
Other communities comprising the Cowichan Lake area are Honeymoon Bay, Mesachie Lake and Youbou, all within easy reach by road. Each community has access to scenic Cowichan Lake, one of the largest fresh-water lakes on Vancouver Island.

Secondary roadways provide access to Port Renfrew, Nitinat and Bamfield, which are the trailheads for the West Coast Trail unit of the Pacific rim National Park Reserve and the old growth forests of Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park.

Take a deep breath… and fill your senses with oxygen and energy. Gone are the fumes of city traffic, and the visual chaos of industry and commerce. In their place are the fresh scents of the wilderness, the scenic riches of nature, and the warmth of the people you’ll encounter along the way, as you begin your adventure in Cowichan… and beyond.

The launching point for your journey is the Town of Lake Cowichan, a friendly community about an hour and a half’s drive from Victoria, BC. Here you can visit the Kaatza Station Museum, take a houseboat tour or hike our great trails. A now unused rail bed in the area forms the western end of the Trans Canada Trail, which continues on the Lower mainland and stretches 16,000 km across Canada.

Don’t forget your fishing rods, as the region is known as the Fly Fishing Capital of Canada. Drop in at the newly developed beach at the Cowichan Lake Education Centre. At Mesachie Lake on the south shore of the Lake Cowichan, you can walk a trail planted with indigenous trees at various stages of growth or, in the village of Mesache Lake, see 237 examples of 33 species of trees from around the world. Honeymoon Bay, a little farther up the road, has the secluded waterfront atmosphere you might expect from its name. Boat across the bay to a marine park, play a round of gold or sip coffee with the locals while you peruse the murals at Honeymoon Bay Heritage Hall.

Great camping abounds all around the Lake, Gordon Bay Provincial Park is one of the Island’s most popular campsites, with warm water, sandy beaches and plenty of flora and fauna to observe and enjoy. Continue on past the park, heading northwest to Heather Campsite at the top of the lake, just one of many forestry campsites.

On the north shore of the lake sits Youbou, a picturesque community nestled in tall timbers and leafy ferns. An old mill site sits on the outskirts of Youbou marking the beginning of a scenic circle tour of the lake.

Farther south along the coastline, Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park is home to some of the world’s largest spruce trees, and weathered cedars that began life when Vikings sailed the seas. Visitors can access the park across Caycuse River Bridge. It is best to arrange a guided tour for safety sake through the Cowichan lake Education Centre.

After a day, a week, or a lifetime of adventures, you can return to Cowichan for more outdoor experiences.
